The Opportunity
Our client is a well-established organisation operating within a large, complex payroll environment. With a high-volume workforce and multiple EBAs, they pride themselves on delivering accurate, compliant payroll while continuously improving systems and processes.
They are seeking an experienced Assistant Payroll Manager to step into a key 2IC role, supporting the Payroll Manager and leading day-to-day operations. This position offers strong exposure to leadership, projects, and senior stakeholders within a collaborative and high-performing team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supporting the Payroll Manager in delivering end-to-end fortnightly payroll across a high-volume workforce
  • Processing payroll through Chris21, ensuring accuracy across EBAs, awards, and legislative requirements
  • Acting as 2IC, stepping in to lead the team and support Payroll Officers
  • Mentoring, training, and guiding team members and broader stakeholders
  • Managing complex payroll queries, reconciliations, and compliance obligations (PAYG, STP, super, payroll tax)
  • Liaising with internal & external stakeholders
  • Supporting system upgrades (Chris21/iChris), including testing, documentation, and implementation
  • Assisting with internal and external audits, ensuring strong controls and compliance
  • Driving continuous improvement across payroll processes and systems
About You
  • 5+ years experience in a proven experience in a high-volume, end-to-end payroll environment (1,000+ employees)
  • Must have strong hands-on experience with Chris21 as well as T&A systems
  • Demonstrated experience working across complex EBAs / awards
  • Leadership capability with experience mentoring or supporting payroll teams
  • Strong understanding of Australian payroll legislation and compliance requirements
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • High attention to detail with the ability to operate autonomously in a fast-paced environment
  • Proactive, solutions-focused mindset with a strong work ethiC
