Our client is a national Australian business that leads the country in the design, manufacture, supply and installation of modular buildings. With operations and a presence across the entire country, and a strong presence in WA, the business delivers end-to-end modular construction solutions across a diverse range of sectors including education, housing, mining, defence and commercial.
The Role
Reporting to the Head of Design, this is a senior leadership and management position. You will be the point of integration across the full project lifecycle, from first client enquiry through design, estimation coordination, manufacturing and delivery.
You will lead a team of approximately 12 across two states (WA and SA) including Design Leads, Estimating Leads and their respective teams. Your key internal relationships will span sales, procurement, manufacturing and project delivery - this is a highly integrated role that touches all parts of the business.
The project mix is genuinely broad. At one end, you could be working on standardised government housing and lifestyle village residences. At the other end, it could be large-scale mining packages - single person quarters, kitchen and dining complexes, alongside education projects and commercial builds. Across all of these you will need to be across the full design scope: architectural, structural, acoustics, energy efficiency, fire and services design etc.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a design team across WA and SA, overseeing resource allocation, capacity planning and technical output
- Ensuring design works are delivery to a high standard and in compliance with project specifications, building codes and regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to project reviews - identifying risks, capacity considerations and value-add opportunities
- Work closely with internal estimating teams across the full project lifecycle
- Support and mentor team leaders in managing their teams day to day
- Drive continuous improvement in workflows, systems and procedures
- There is a separate Estimating Manager who handles the details of estimate reviews - this role needs an awareness and oversight of estimating, but doesn't need to be hands-on estimating
- Strong contractor-side background - you understand how buildings actually get built, not just designed
- 7+ years experience in a design and construction environment
- Previous experience in a similar design management or leadership position
- Demonstrated experience working with non-residential construction e.g. mining, education, commercial or similar
- People leader with the ability to lead other leaders in their team
- Big picture and commercially minded - able to collaborate across a large, established business and drive outcomes
- Familiarity with systems such as Revit, CostX, Bluebeam, Autodesk Construction Cloud and MS Projects advantageous
