The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) promotes profitable and sustainable agriculture, fishery and forestry industries for Queensland, as well as being responsible for leading the Queensland Government’s response to natural disasters and biosecurity incidents.  DAF’s workforce of over 2000 people, spans the areas of policy development, leading-edge science, biosecurities, fisheries, forestry management, trade and export. 

About the role

Reporting to the Deputy Director-General of Fisheries and Forestry, the Executive Director, Fisheries Queensland has a crucial role in developing, modernising and maintaining policy, legislative instruments and strategies which optimises the value of the state’s fisheries industries.  This key leadership role will drive strategy and transformation in facilitating the growth and profitability of commercial fishing and aquaculture industries; maximising the recreation fishing experience and ensuring a legacy of sustainable fisheries for future generations.   With the roll-out of the Government’s ‘Queensland Sustainable Fisheries Strategy 2017 - 2027’, this role represents a unique opportunity to further enhance the current reform agenda to deliver long-lasting benefits for all stakeholders of Queensland’s fisheries.
In addition to leading the operations of Fisheries Queensland, this role has key deliverables across fisheries legislation and strategic policy; fisheries resource modelling and analysis; designing digital solutions, development assessment functions under the Queensland land use planning framework and compliance and enforcement functions through the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol.

Key focus areas include:
  • Provision of high-level strategic advice to the Deputy Director-General on strategic issues and opportunities in the fisheries sector
  • Development of streamlined policy and operations strategies that promote balanced fisheries resource and sustainability needs, to optimise the value of Queensland fisheries resources
  • Development of policy and operations strategies through negotiation and collaboration and promoting consistent high-quality information exchange with key industry, community and government stakeholders to ensure policy and strategy are effective and responsive to emerging challenges and priorities
  • Lead change management, capacity building and transformation both within Fisheries Queensland and the industry
  • Develop critical reporting mechanisms to promote and identify the value and sustainability of Queensland’s fisheries sector in achieving key government commitments
  • Represent the department and Government in a range of high level regional, state and national forums
  • Commit to personal development and provide strategic leadership to the unit, including fostering a professional environment which encourages commitment, ethical behaviour and decision-making, skills development, professional growth and continual improvement  
About you

To succeed in this role, you should be a strategic thinker with exceptional leadership and stakeholder engagement skills and a demonstrable track record across policy, government regulation and compliance, governance and/or organisational leadership.   Significant experience in the Fisheries and/or Natural Resource Management sectors is highly preferred.
