Our client is a growing construction and project-based business operating across multiple entities within the construction sector.
An opportunity now exists for an experienced Financial Controller to join the business in a key leadership role, overseeing the finance function across the group and partnering closely with senior leadership to support ongoing growth and operational performance.
The Role
Reporting to the CFO / Managing Director, the Financial Controller will take ownership of the finance function across multiple entities within the group. Operating within a project-based environment, the role will oversee financial reporting, compliance, project accounting, and cash flow management, while supporting commercial and operational decision-making across the business.
This position will work closely with project managers, commercial teams, and senior leadership to ensure accurate project reporting, effective cost control, and strong financial governance across the organisation.
The role is best suited to a hands-on finance professional with strong construction or project-based accounting experience who enjoys operating within a fast-paced SME environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes across multiple entities
- Prepare consolidated management reporting, including P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow reporting
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis across the group
- Manage project accounting processes, including WIP reporting, revenue recognition, progress claims, retentions, and project cost control
- Partner closely with project managers and operational stakeholders to monitor project performance and profitability
- Oversee intercompany accounting, reconciliations, eliminations, and consolidations
- Manage compliance obligations including BAS, GST, payroll tax, FBT, and statutory reporting requirements
- Lead cash flow management, treasury activities, and banking relationships
- Liaise with external auditors, tax advisors, and other external stakeholders
- Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team
- Drive continuous improvement across finance processes, controls, and systems
You will ideally bring strong experience operating within a construction, engineering, or project-based environment, with the ability to lead finance operations while partnering closely with operational stakeholders.
You will bring:
- Proven experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance leadership role
- Strong construction or project-based accounting experience
- Demonstrated experience managing WIP, percentage-of-completion accounting, progress claims, and retentions
- Experience managing multi-entity structures and consolidated reporting
- Strong commercial acumen and ability to support operational decision-making
- Hands-on leadership style with the ability to operate across both strategic and operational finance responsibilities
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- CA / CPA qualified
- Degree qualified in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or related discipline
- Experience within construction, engineering, infrastructure, or related project-based industries essential
- Experience leading and developing finance teams
- Exposure to construction/project ERP systems highly regarded
