About the Opportunity:

Sharp & Carter Legal is proud to be partnering with NSW Ports on the appointment of a Senior Legal Counsel to join its Sydney based legal team. Reporting directly to the General Counsel and GM, Property, this is a senior and highly trusted role within a lean in-house team.

The position offers broad exposure across commercial, infrastructure, property and regulatory matters, with significant stakeholder engagement across the business.

Based primarily at Port Botany, the role is highly integrated with the business and its operations, providing the successful candidate with strong visibility across projects, stakeholders and day-to-day commercial decision-making.

This role is ideally suited to a commercially astute lawyer who enjoys operating close to the business, taking ownership of complex matters and working autonomously in a dynamic environment.

About the Role:

The successful candidate will advise across a broad range of legal and commercial matters, including:
  • Complex commercial contracting and negotiations
  • Major infrastructure and development projects
  • Property, leasing and land use matters
  • Regulatory, compliance and governance issues
  • Risk management and disputes
  • Managing external preferred legal firms and key stakeholder relationships
  • Advising senior leadership on strategic and operational matters
The role requires someone capable of balancing legal and commercial risk while providing practical, solutions-focused advice across a diverse range of business issues. You will work closely with senior stakeholders across operations, property, finance, infrastructure and executive leadership teams.

The business is seeking someone who can pivot across different legal workstreams, think strategically, negotiate effectively and
confidently operate with minimal supervision.

About You:

To be successful in this role, you will ideally bring:
  • Around 8+ years’ PQE
  • Strong foundational training gained within a reputable private practice environment, followed by in-house experience within a
  • sophisticated commercial business
  • Proven experience negotiating and managing complex commercial arrangements and projects
  • Strong commercial judgement and strategic thinking capability
  • The ability to work autonomously and confidently manage matters end-to-end
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • A pragmatic and adaptable approach, with the ability to pivot across a broad mix of legal and operational matters
  • Exposure to infrastructure, logistics, transport, property, energy or other regulated industries will be highly regarded
