WHO IS ZOE RAPHAEL?

I’m a very social person, I love spending time with my partner Adam and our cat Lylah in our exciting new house that we recently moved into, as well as socialising with my family and friends. I’m a very caring person - I enjoy helping people and being an ear to listen or a friendly face for everyone in my life, and this is something I carry into my professional life as well. I’m dedicated, hardworking, highly motivated, meticulous and I always like to ensure things are done properly.

 WHAT INTERESTS AND HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE OUTSIDE OF WORK?

Most weekends in summer I will be outdoors hunting the sun and aside from seeing my friends and family I love being busy in general. I enjoy delicious food, exercising and travelling. I am also the go-to “Event Planner” in my group of friends, and as I am fast approaching my 30th year I have been planning a number of 30th Birthdays as well as Hens Parties and Baby Showers which I really enjoy doing.

HOW DID YOU END UP IN RECRUITMENT?

I am passionate about helping people and being a part of a growing business, and I have found that working in recruitment is a way that I can achieve both. Over 5 years ago now I bumped into an old friend from University (Simon Cust, who is now a Partner of our Sydney business), who was running a team in recruitment himself at the time, and we started chatting about him possibly assisting me in finding a Marketing role, as this is what I had studied. After a few conversations though he mentioned that maybe I might like to explore the possibility of recruitment, and that he was actually hiring for his own team at that time. 5 years on, I am still in recruitment and I absolutely love it. The versatility that Sharp & Carter provides me along with the ability to help people and grow within a business is something I doubt I could find anywhere else and I couldn’t be happier to have made the decision to be in this field.


WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE AT SHARP & CARTER ENTAIL?

I am a Director in the Business Support team at Sharp & Carter. In this role I recruit for high level Executive Assistant positions and also lead a team of 3 consultants and one administrator. While day to day recruitment is still a large part of my role, I also dedicate a lot of my time to mentoring and training my team so they can continue to develop their careers and service our clients to the best of their abilities, as well as to the standards set by the rest of the Sharp & Carter business.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU AS A LEADER DEVELOPING A YOUNG TEAM?

As I have mentioned, I really love and enjoy helping and supporting people - it is probably the aspect of my role that I most enjoy. I lead a team of four, and have loved watching them all grow over the past two years since Elise and I launched Business Support. They are all extremely dedicated and we all share the same values which to me is super motivating. Working with an exciting, up and coming team, and seeing them develop and grow day by day is so rewarding and that in itself is motivating as well.


WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER THAT YOU FEEL HAVE HAD AN IMPACT ON YOUR SUCCESS?

Elise Dawson and I launched Business Support in October 2016, which was a really exciting time. Being able to launch a business with my best friend is something I feel really lucky to be able to have had the opportunity to do, however I think one of the hardest parts of the role and of running a division and even of recruitment as a whole is knowing things are forever changing and that we have to continually adapt. The Business Support business has now just ticked over the two-year mark, and we are still growing and facing new challenges every day. Probably the challenge that has contributed most to me being where I am today is the challenge of stepping outside of the traditional recruitment role into a leadership position.  Although it was a process and a learning experience I have found it to be so rewarding and I am constantly learning more about not only my team, but also about myself and about running a business as a whole. I’m not sure there are many other companies out there that operate in the Partnership model that Sharp & Carter does, and so any challenges that are thrown my way are only more learning opportunities on the path to future success for the Business Support business, for me and for my team.

IN YOUR MIND, WHAT MAKES AN EFFECTIVE LEADER?

Communication is really important in being an effective leader, as is motivation, positivity, giving and receiving feedback, being passionate, being dedicated, leading by example and believing in yourself as well as in others.  As a leader I am so lucky to have the support of my team in all of our endeavours - we ride the highs and the lows together and try to make every day fun. We do personal training, yoga, Monday team breakfasts and we were even lucky enough to spend time on a boat over Christmas last year to celebrate an awesome year together.

WHAT MAKES ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN RUNNING A DIVISION IN THEIR FUTURE?

Running a division is a very exciting challenge. I think as long as you have passion for what you do and the support of a great team and business leaders, then I would highly recommend it. It is a very rewarding job and truly makes me love what I do.
