About the role:
The firm is looking for an Associate to join their growing Environment and Planning team. The E&P team sits within the Real Estate and Development Group and is an integral part of business leading Projects, Real Estate & Development practice. The team works collaboratively with the Real Estate and Projects Practice Groups across all jurisdictions, giving their lawyers an opportunity to work on major projects throughout Australia and overseas.

As an Associate in the E&P team you will:

  • Provide strategic planning approval advice for projects across a range of market sectors including residential, retail, commercial, industrial and logistics, aged care/health care, mining, transport, water, energy and renewables.

  • Instruct in planning and environment appeals and originating applications, land acquisition/compensation proceedings, mining objection hearings, and environmental and development offence prosecutions.

  • Negotiate and draft infrastructure agreements at both State and local government levels, and offset agreements.

  • Advise on a variety of environmental issues at both Commonwealth and State levels, including due diligence for a range of transactions.

  • Advise on planning, environmental and associated regulatory approvals.

  • Advise on climate change and ESG issues.

  • Advise on biodiversity conservation, water, heritage and environmental protection legislation.

About you:

  • Experience working in an Environment & Planning team, ideally at a well-regarded top tier firm, or boutique firm.

  • Experience in Planning and Environment Court litigation, including drafting Court documents and Court practice and procedure.

  • Some experience in planning applications/appeals to the Court of Appeal.

  • Some experience in mining objection hearings in the Land Court.

  • A willingness to build an understanding of clients and develop effective working relationships.

  • An ability to effectively manage matters.

  • A willingness to participate in business development activities, such as pitch documents, firm-wide pursuits, article writing, attending industry events and hosting seminars.

  • A desire and ability to grow, both as an Environment & Planning Lawyer and leader.

  • A strong team ethic.

  • An ability to establish a professional profile and internal networks.

  • A willingness to build an understanding of clients and develop effective working relationships.

  • A desire to learn, grow, network, mentor others.

  • Have 1-5 years PQE.
