About the role:

The Council Secretary plays a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless functioning of the Council, Academic Senate, and Controlled Entity activities. Reporting to the Chief of Staff and working closely with the Chancellor, this position ensures adherence to governance frameworks, laws, and policies while promoting transparency and efficiency.

Leadership:
  • Manage and coordinate the secretariat team servicing various university bodies.
  • Drive team performance, capability development, and talent management.
  • Foster a culture aligned with the Organisation's values and behavior
  • Contribute to policy development and review processes related to governance
  • Undertake university-wide responsibilities and support special projects.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts and handle information with integrity.
Governance Management:
  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, regulatory guidelines, and university policies.
  • Develop and review governance documents and assist in implementing best practices.
  • Support oversight of risk management, crisis management, and sustainability efforts.
  • Facilitate elections and nominations processes and procure legal advice as needed.
  • Drive governance-related initiatives and training programs for council members and executives.
Communication & Documentation:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for council members and stakeholders.
  • Facilitate communication between council members and university leadership.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of council proceedings and official documents.
About you:

You could already have occupied a similar role within the education space, or come from an established role within the public or private sector governance and Board management. Some of the skills and attributes that will help you succeed in this role are:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field 
  • Proven experience in governance, preferably within a higher education setting.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and handle confidential information.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management abilities.
