Our client is a long‑established organisation playing a critical role in Australia’s logistics and supply chain network. They are seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to join them on a 12‑month fixed term contract while the incumbent moves into a payroll system implementation project.
This is a hands‑on, visible leadership role, well suited to someone who thrives in complex payroll environments and can lead decisively and pragmatically during periods of transformation.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Financial Controller, your responsibilities will include:
- Managing a team of two Payroll Officers (a weekly, fortnightly and monthly payroll of 1100 employees)
- Leading end‑to‑end payroll operations for a large, operational workforce
- Providing day‑to‑day leadership as the stand‑in Payroll Manager during system implementation
- Managing payroll processing across multiple EBAs and/or awards, including shift work, overtime, penalties, allowances and leave
- Ensuring ongoing compliance with Australian payroll legislation, industrial instruments and internal controls
- Overseeing payroll reconciliations, variance analysis and reporting
- Acting as an escalation point for complex payroll queries and issues
- Partnering closely with HR, Finance and operational leaders to maintain trust, transparency and continuity through change
About You
You are an experienced payroll leader with strong credibility in operational, award driven environments. You balance compliance, employee confidence and commercial realities with a calm and pragmatic approach.
You will bring:
- Proven experience as a Payroll Manager or Senior Payroll Lead
- Strong hands‑on exposure to EBAs and modern awards
- In‑depth knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, tax, superannuation and Fair Work requirements
- Experience managing payroll risk, remediation and complex payroll issues
- A resilient, detail‑focused and practical leadership style
- Strong stakeholder management skills, including engagement with operational leaders and employee representatives
- The confidence to lead through change and system transitions
